– A battle is under way for the control of Israel’s judicial system. Many liberals feel they are a waning minority. (via theeconomist) How can this possibly be construed as a good thing? Please, I’m asking you to play devil’s advocate and explain it to me.

ronbailey's Laptop →
yhf: This morning, Ron Bailey posted that his laptop died. This is more than just an unfortunate inconvenience; it directly impacts his income, as it’s how he makes his living. Ron is a good friend to many, and a good-hearted individual in general. He’s organized Pledgie drives for…

Surprise!
I’m totally in love. Like, head-over-heels, puke-inducing pet-names, sickeningly-sappy, radically-reciprocated in love. I’ll spare you the stomach-turning details, but…there you have it. Life really is a kick in the pants.

Fresh Wisdom
At the gym today, an 82 year-old woman told me that getting old “bites it.”  If I live to be 82, I would really like to have as firm a grasp of the vernacular as she does.

An assignment, should you choose to accept it.
teapartyjesus: Pick an amount of money that’s mildly meaningful to you. I don’t mean bill money. I’m talking an amount of money that would make you pause for a moment to think about whether you should spend it. For some of you, that’s twenty bucks. For some, ten or five. For some of you (and I’ve been there, believe me) it’s a dollar. Whatever it is, decide on it. Tomorrow, you’re going to give...

Little Sleep's-Head Sprouting Hair In The...
I’ve been spending quite a lot of time at night with my young niece lately.  I know this is long, but it’s quite amazing.  This is my favorite poem by Galway Kinnell. Little Sleep’s-Head Sprouting Hair In The Moonlight 1 You scream, waking from a nightmare. When I sleepwalk into your room, and pick you up, and hold you up in the moonlight, you cling to me hard, as if...

A cry for self-restraint
I went to the store this morning and bought 80% healthy food and 20% food of questionable nutritional value.  I cannot stop putting the latter into my facehole. Of course I’m blaming PMS, but then I feel guilty because PMS shouldn’t be an excuse for anything.  How unfeminist of me! Sigh.  I think I need another pumpkin muffin to eat while I think this over.

Sex, Gender and Toilets →
undercovernun: courtody: A really interesting link about sociological images in society (directions and indicators as to who should be using which toilet), and their relationship to sex and gender. This is, indeed, fascinating… and well worth your time to read. Really, this is quite intriguing.  Give it a look, huh?

Checkmate
Today I took my remaining elderly dog to the vet for a med-check which quickly morphed into some end-of-life decision-making.  I knew the day was coming, I just hadn’t thought about it being today.  Winston’s brain lesion had grown enough to raise concerns about his level of pain and his quality of life.  It was time. Two dogs down in two months.  They’d each lived 15 years, so...

Suicide is not the answer.
That’s for sure.  I mean, I think it’s clearly an answer, just not the answer.  Not the answer right now.  Not to this question.  Wait.  I forgot the question.  If the question has anything to do with me getting dressed and/or out of bed, then I believe I need to rethink this whole “not-the-answer” position. Also, someone bring me cupcakes. I’m pretty sure...

tbmimsthethird: In the late 80s, I had a fairly long discussion with a friend about why hallucinogenics weren’t popular in the Black community. His response: “Life’s fucked up enough when you’re Black in the South. You don’t really need another perspective on it. Plus, if hallucinogenics existed in our community, Hip Hop wouldn’t. Those two would never mix.” That’s me boiling down a couple of...

The Waking
I know it’s not poetry-a-go-go today, but this is exactly how I feel.  Yes, it’s a tad bit dark.  It is also beautiful.  (On the whole, today is not a good day.) The Waking I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow. I feel my fate in what I cannot fear. I learn by going where I have to go. We think by feeling. What is there to know? I hear my being dance from ear to ear. I wake to...

I Will Make You Brooches
I will make you brooches and toys for your delight Of bird-song at morning and star-shine at night. I will make a palace fit for you and me Of green days in forests and blue days at sea. I will make my kitchen, and you shall keep your room, Where white flows the river and bright blows the broom, And you shall wash your linen and keep your body white In rainfall at morning and dewfall at night. And...

Love Is Not All
Love is not all: it is not meat nor drink Nor slumber nor a roof against the rain; Nor yet a floating spar to men that sink And rise and sink and rise and sink again; Love can not fill the thickened lung with breath, Nor clean the blood, nor set the fractured bone; Yet many a man is making friends with death Even as I speak, for lack of love alone. It well may be that in a difficult hour, Pinned...

Bucket List (following a workout)
me: I literally just crawled up the basement stairs and all the way across the (admittedly) small house to the couch, discarding all my sweat-soaked clothing along the way.
me: And this is where [roommate] will find my dead, naked body later this evening when he returns from the work-mandated Royals game.
It was lovely knowing you.
Spread the work that physical fitness kills.
me: There is so much to say
and so little time
before my body simply stops.
Like, I wish I'd found a way to like asparagus.
me: Or watched Firefly.
And I never made it to Istanbul.
me: Oh, and I wanted to bring down the insurance industry.
me: And I wish I had made a tape for Julia to encourage her to read as she grows up.
C: So, you wanted to make a tape, to encourage someone to read.
me: My mind is going, C.
Expect there to be inconsistencies.
C: No, no. It's fine. I always wanted to create an interpretive dance celebrating modern banking.
C: It never got much farther than a flurry of me flipping the bird.
me: I love you.
